The ONLY Solution to Reduce Stray and Feral Cat Populations!

Kitten Season is upon us, there’s no time to wait!

If you or someone you know is caring for stray and feral cats, please take advantage of and spread the word about the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter’s “FREE” Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program.

Please understand that “Hope for Hempstead Shelter” does not provide the TNR Service but will advise and assist you by offering information concerning TNR Programs available to Town of Hempstead Residents through local Shelters and Rescue Organizations.  Please do not expect that the cats will be trapped and taken away. There is no safe place for them to go and TNR is your only solution for feral adult cats.

Some town shelters contract out this service with TNR Rescue Organizations in order to accomplish this efficiently and cost effectively, but not Hempstead. The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter (TOHAS) runs on an annual budget of $7.45 Million Dollars and a payroll of over $3 Million Dollars, 4X the cost of other animal Shelters. With this amount of money, TOHAS cannot justify contracting out an outside organization to do this, instead they insist on doing it with animal shelter employees. That would be acceptable if they can do this properly and efficiently. Have a pen and paper ready to take notes and record what you are told. You will NEED THIS INFORMATION if you come back to us for help!

STEP 1 – Contact the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter (TOHAS):

How to contact TOHAS and what to expect when requesting TNR assistance. Please make certain that you write down the name of the person you are speaking with.

  • Call (516) 785-5220, Press option “3” for TNR Department.
  • Members of the Community should receive:
    • prompt and courteous response to inquiries (within 1 business day).
    • initial visit to the feeding site by a TOHAS employee as soon as possible.
    • trapping by TOHAS should begin within two (2) weeks of site visit.

If you DO NOT receive the service described above, HFHS will then further advise you.
